Stars align as Orioles sweep visiting Barry County Christian.
On Thursday night in Quincy the stars aligned as the Orioles played host of the Barry County Christian Eagles in two hotly competitive games winning 4-3 in 10 innings and 3-2. The Eagles an unknown to the Orioles came toQuincy with a 23-5 record. A smaller school who had plenty of talent across the diamond.
In game one which needed extra innings the Orioles from behind when Brady Mescher scored to tie the game and Mickey Connin drove home Hunter Tinervia with an RBI single with two outs in the 10th setting off a home plate celebration and we’ll earned victory.
Tinervia threw the 1st five innings and held the Eagles in check. He was relieved by So. Mason Graves making his varsity debut on the mound. Graves was sharp and pitched like a veteran over the final 5 innings to record his 1st varsity win. Tinervia and Graves combined for 14 strikeouts.
The Orioles were led on offense by Connin who had 2 hits and Grant Holroyd who had an rbi single. Mescher started the 10 inning rally with a one out 2b and scored from 2nd base on a ground ball by Tinervia and and error to set up Connin’s game winning hit. Riley Miner, Ryan Kempter and Brennen Allman also had hits for the Orioles.
In game two it was again Graves who returned to the mound in the seventh inning to stop an Eagle rally and record the save. Earning a rare win and save in one day. Kempter and Allman both pitched with a determined pitch count of 50 pitches before handing the ball off to Graves.
Mescher again came a big with another 2 run 2b in the 5th inning to put the Orioles ahead 3-1 heading into the 6th inning. The Orioles recorded 10 hits in the game 2 each from Miner, Tinervia and Holroyd . Kempter, Connin and Designated Hitter Alex Barry also had key hits
With the wins the Orioles move to 19-8 overall and travel to Jackson on Saturday to face the state ranked Titans in a doubleheader slated to begin at 10:00am
