Quincy Baseball spilts Big8 DH with Jonesville
On a picture perfect May afternoon in Quincy the Orioles and Jonesville battled for the last time as conference foes. Each team took advantage of a big inning and was backed by good pitching to earn a split.The Comets won game 1, 5-1 and the Orioles returned the favor with a 6-2 game 2 win. The Comets moved their Big 8 record to 8-2 while the Orioles are one game back at 7-3 heading into the home stretch of conference play.
In game 1 Quincy Senior Brady Mescher battled with Comet pitcher Drew Bradley. The game went to the 6 inning with the Comets holding a slim 2-1 lead. The Orioles had 3 fielding miscues in the 6 th and the Comets scored 3 unearned runs to move ahead 5-1. The Orioles could not solve Bradley who struck out 11 Oriole hitters. Mescher took the loss despite striking out 9 Jonesville hitters
Ryan Kempter, Mescher, Hunter Tinervia, and Grant Holroyd had hits for the Orioles. Tinervia also added an RBI.
The Orioles bounced back in game 2 and scored 5 1st inning runs and held on for a 6-2 win. Dreden Feltner and Kempter slowed down the Comet bats. Feltner was effective through 5 innings to earn the win. Kempter pitched the final 2 innings to record the save. The duo fanned 7 Comet hitters.
The Orioles 1st 3 hitters Jimmy Maynard, Kempter, and Mescher bunted safely to set the tone for the Orioles 5 run 1st. Hunter Tinervia added a run scoring single. The biggest hit in the inning was a two out two strike two run single by Feltner. Perhaps the biggest hit of the day for the Orioles. Mason Graves also added a bunt base hit for the O’s
With the win the Orioles move to 12- 4 overall and 7-3 in Big 8 Conference play. They return to action the Saturday traveling to Jackson to play in the Al Glick Invitational. The Orioles will begin play against Jackson High School at 10:00 am.
