The Orioles earned a hard fought, competitive extra inning win in the opening game of of non league double header against visiting Grass Lk on Thursday. After building a 7 run lead, the Orioles needed extra innings to defeat the Warriors 8-7.
The winning run came in the bottom of the 8th when Sr Brady Mescher scored on a bases loaded past ball with 2 outs.
Sr Dreden Feltner pitched well into the 6 inning before the Orioles made an uncharacteristic 6 errors in the Grass Lk half of the 6th inning. Feltner allowed just 4 hits, 0 earned runs to go with 5 strikeouts. Sr. Hunter Tinervia came on to get the Orioles out of the 6 th inning and pitched effectively in the 7th and 8th inning to record the win. Tinervia struck out the side in the 7 th inning to help the Orioles get back the momentum and Jr Parker Fraley had an unassisted double play to stop a warrior rally in the 8th inning. Jr catcher Grant Holroyd threw out 3 Warriors on the base paths
The Oriole bats recorded 9 hits and benefitted from 11 Warrior walks. Jr Mickey Connin and So. Brennen Allman led the way with 2 hits each. Sr Riley Miner, Tinervia, Holroyd, Jr Ethan Copas, and So. Ryan Kempter also added hits.
In a shortened game 2 the Warriors won 2-1 in 5 innings. Grass Lake pitcher Brayden Lape, who recently competed on the NBC “Voice” music competition, showed his baseball skills as he 2 hit the Orioles and struck out 9.
Oriole Sr. Ryder Schmatenberger, who is coming off a basketball season injury had a quality start going 3 innings and allowing just 2 hits. Allman relieved and threw 2 scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts.
Mescher led the offense with an RBI single and Copas collected another hit on the day.
At weeks end the Orioles have gotten off to a good start and will return to action next Monday with a home double header against East Jackson before opening the Big 8 Conference with a Tuesday showdown against Reading.
