Quincy Orioles take two from Jonesville on Senior Day
After six straight non leagues games the Quincy Orioles returned to Big 8 conference play hosting Jonesville on “Senior Day”. The Comets came into the game with a two game conference lead over the Orioles. When the dust settled, the Orioles won both games by the score of 5-3 and 10-3 to draw even in the conference standings with the Comets at 7-5.
Sophomore Brady Mescher was one of many whose efforts kept the momentum on the O side. Quincy rallied to take the lead in the 6th inning. Mescher entered the game in relief of Bradley Harper, who picked up his 6th win of the yr (4th in Big 8 play), and closed out the game recording his 3rd save on the season. The righty wasn’t done as he was the starting pitcher in game 2 and threw 5 solid innings holding the Jonesville in check in gaining the win on the mound. Kyler Economou was strong in relief of Mescher to finish game two from the mound.
The Orioles trailed 3- 0 entering game 1 in the bottom of the 6th inning. After a walk, and a Kyler Maurer 2b, Harper was hit by pitch loading the bases for Davin George who reached on an infield single scoring Economou. A throwing error on the play allowed Maurer and Riley Miner, who was running for Harper to score the tying runs. The Orioles took the lead when George scored and added an insurance run on a Cody Nuesbaum single that scored Blake Burkhart. Mescher did his part and the Orioles celebrated a Conference win on “Senior Day”
In game two the Orioles raced out to a 9-0 lead after 3 innings as Mescher effectively held the Comets in check allowing just 3 hits while striking out 7. Economou had 4k’s in relief.
Cody Nuesbaum led the offense from the lead off position going 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an rbi. Economou had a 2b and 3 rbi, Mescher added 2rbi and Karsen Maurer had an rbi single.
The Orioles now stand 11-11 overall and 7-5 in league play. They have a couple of days off then will compete in the Al Glick Invitational in Jackson this weekend facing both Manchester and Jackson Lumen Christi.
