Quincy played Waldron in the season opener, gutting out a 51-45 double-overtime victory. The first half was a defensive battle, as the teams played to a stalemate at 14-14 at halftime. Points were at a premium, as the Orioles were plagued by early foul trouble.
In the 3rd quarter, Quincy outscored the Spartans 15-10 to take a 29-24 lead heading into the 4th quarter. Waldron outplayed the Orioles in the 4th quarter, with the help of numerous free throw opportunities. Quincy had the ball for the last minute, but a 3-point shot by Brandon Miner was off the mark, sending the game into overtime. Waldron battled back to take the lead by two. The Orioles called a timeout and set up a play. The Orioles found freshman Brandon Miner under the hoop for the game-tying basket, to knot the score up at 41-41 after the first overtime. In the second overtime, it was all Quincy, outsourcing Waldron, 10-4.
Ashtyn Morris led with 17 points and 4 rebounds; Ryder Schmachtenberger had 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists; Sam Sawyer had 5 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals; Brandon Miner had 5 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals; Tae'Sean Bodley and Riley Miner chipped in 3 points apiece, while Landen Kelley and Ethan Burritt added 2 points each.
The Orioles are 1-0 on the season, with their next game at home on Tuesday, December 14th, against Sand Creek.
