Quincy Rally falls Short in District play vs Homer
The Orioles trailed 6-2 entering the 7th inning against Homer in MHSAA District play on Saturday at Bronson. After a lead off hit by Riley Miner, another hit by Hunter Tinervia , his 3rd of the day, and a walk to Brady Mescher, the Orioles were poised to rally. With 3 runs in and 2 Homer pitching changes the score stood 6-5 when Homer recorded the final out and hung on for a 6-5 win.
Tinervia lead the Orioles at the plate with a 2b and 2 singles, while Miner added 2 hits. Karsen Maurer had a base loaded ground rule double that scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning. The RBI were his 29 and 30 of the season. Brennen Allman also swung the bat well and recorded a line drive single. Another Allman line drive was snagged by the Homer defense robbing him of another hit.
Brady Mescher worked the 1st 5 innings of the game and kept the Orioles within striking distance. He recorded 5 strikeouts e route to 63 strikeouts on the season in 51 innings of work. The Junior righty finished with a 6-2 record on the season. Mason Snyder finished on the mound and continued his strong 2nd half of the season by throwing a scoreless 6th inning.
While bowing out of the State Tournament was a tough blow. The Orioles can still celebrate a successful 2022 season that saw them battle in the always tough Big8 Conference and record non league wins over state ranked Grass Lake and Mendon and good wins over Division 1 teams Jackson High and Coldwater while dodging lots of rain to finish the season at 16-14.
The Orioles say goodbye to one of the best to wear the uniform in Karsen Maurer. The 2 time captain, clean up hitter and all around great young man finishes his Oriole career with a career .300 BA, 20 2b hits and 3 home runs while holding down the “hot corner” and becoming this years “ closer” pitching has way to 3 wins and 2 saves on the mound.
