Orioles Go 1-1 at Dome Classic in East Jackson

The Quincy Varsity Orioles split a pair of games Saturday in the Dome Classic hosted by East Jackson, falling in a tough 5-4 battle against Jonesville before responding with a dominant 13-3 victory over East Jackson later in the day. Quincy outhit Jonesville 8-6 but came up just short in a 5-4 loss in the opener. Jonesville struck first with a two-run single in the opening inning, but the Orioles answered quickly in the second. Joe Gray doubled home a run, JJ Wright followed with a two-run double, and Bryson Estlow added an RBI single to give Quincy a 4-2 lead. Estlow paced the Orioles offensively with two hits, while Wright drove in two runs and finished 1-for-3 at the plate. Gray also added a double and scored once. Matthew Taylor started on the mound for Quincy, allowing two runs on three hits over three innings while striking out three. Andrew Dunn provided relief work as the Orioles stayed within striking distance throughout the afternoon. Jonesville regained the lead in the sixth inning and held on despite Quincy’s strong offensive showing. Quincy finished with eight hits in the contest, including doubles from Gray, Christian Craven, and Wright. Estlow added a pair of hits and an RBI, while Ethan Drumm and Taylor also contributed base hits. The Orioles bounced back in a big way in game two, rolling past East Jackson 13-3 behind aggressive baserunning, patient hitting, and solid pitching. Quincy scored early and often, plating two runs in the first inning before breaking the game open with a five-run fifth inning. Taylor and Kale Dirschell helped the offense with two hits apiece, while Dirschell and Taylor each drove in two runs. JJ Wright added an RBI, and Drew Carlisle chipped in with a run-scoring groundout. The Orioles showed tremendous discipline at the plate, drawing 17 walks in the contest. Joe Gray led the way with four walks and scored twice. Quincy also wreaked havoc on the bases, stealing 12 bags in the win. Estlow, Gray, Drew Nuesbaum, Wright, and Dirschell each recorded multiple stolen bases. Gray earned the win on the mound, tossing three innings while allowing just one unearned run and striking out two. Dirschell worked four innings in relief to secure the victory. Defensively, Quincy turned two double plays to help keep momentum throughout the game. The Orioles are back in action Tuesday when they travel to Reading
