The Quincy Orioles earned their first win of the 2026 season in dramatic fashion, rallying for a 6-5 victory over visiting Hillsdale in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Quincy High School Thursday night. Quincy broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 6-4 lead. Hillsdale threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases and pushing one run across, but Cobee Stevens came on in relief and recorded a clutch strikeout to secure the win and earn the save. Kale Dirschell picked up his first varsity victory in relief, following a strong start from JJ Wright. Wright pitched four innings while striking out seven. Dirschell added 2.2 innings of effective work to keep the Orioles in control late. Offensively, Quincy was outhit 8-5 but made the most of its opportunities. Matthew Taylor, JJ Wright, Ethan Drumm, Andrew Dunn, and Dirschell each recorded hits, with Dirschell adding a double. RBIs came from Joe Gray, Taylor, Drumm, and Caden Norris. Game 2 was halted due to darkness after four innings with the score tied 5-5. Hillsdale jumped out to a 5-0 lead early, but Quincy responded with a four-run fourth inning to even the score. The Orioles used 16 players in the shortened contest. Freshman Matthew Taylor got the start on the mound in Game 2, while Caleb Wendorf followed with two strong innings of relief, striking out two. Quincy collected seven hits in the game, led by Stevens with two hits and two RBIs. Gray, Dunn, Taylor, Drumm, and Dirschell also contributed hits, while Dunn and Taylor added RBIs. Pinch runner Kaleb Rudduck made an impact on the bases, stealing second and scoring the tying run on a headfirst slide at home. Quincy returns to action next Tuesday with a key Big 8 Conference matchup at Springport.
